Captain's Story

Like many, COVID-19 forced Paul Esgate, a commercial airline pilot, to pause his pre-pandemic career and seek a different vocation.   

During his time away from flying, Paul turned his passion for buying, selling, and renovating property into a business that supports people in their journey to purchase a property. The result was the launch of Captain’s Property Checklist, a business focused on delivering detailed pre-purchase property inspections as well as property styling and renovating advice.    

Paul’s interest in property stems from his childhood where he spent most of his holidays working alongside his Grandfather who was a carpenter. During these formative years, Paul not only learnt the fundamentals of the building trade but also about his grandfather’s love of flying something Paul shared a passion for.    

As a teen, Paul witnessed the devastating impact termites can have on a property. Following an inspection conducted by his father termites were discovered in the footings of their home. 

The damp conditions around the foundations of the house created the perfect setting for termites to congregate. From that point they had made their way through the concrete and brick footings, into the wooden floor bearers and up into the interior architraves. Unfortunately the only way remedy the infestation was to embark on an expensive removal and replacement exercise.   

Following High School, Paul studied at the University of Newcastle graduating with a Bachelor of Science majoring in Aviation.  

Paul now holds the rank of Captain and for the past 15 years has flown both domestic and international services for one of Australia's major airline groups.   

Alongside his flying career, Paul has created an extensive property portfolio with his partner Kira. Paul has also invested in his property knowledge by becoming a qualified and registered Housesafe Inspector with Housesafe Inspection Training and Education.
